News From the Board of DirectorsThe Board of Directors (BoD) took several actions of major importance at a meeting on May 10 that members should know about. We have received a proposal by the Bluffs Hunting Club, which leases the land south and west of our property and owns the big house just east of our gate on 96th Road. They are going to begin a bird hunting operation on that and other land with a VERY expensive private club. They need a rifle range for their purposes and have asked if they might work out an arrangement with us to use our ranges for training (we are not yet sure what kind or how much training), in return for allowing a number (to be determined) of our members to hunt on their place at their cost for birds, etc. We have not heard any specifics as yet, but we need to be on good terms with our neighbors, and so we will try to work with them. We also have no idea of how many of our members might take advantage of the chance to hunt on a private place. The Board needs some guidance from you! If you have any experience with this sort of thing, or have any interest in hunting there, please give Denny Reul a call at (303) 233-5696 or e-mail at denreul@attbi.com. FAMILY MEMBERSHIPIt has been traditional club policy to require the children of club members to join as individual members once they reach the age of 21. Some members have mentioned that their children are still listed as at home after age 21 because they are full time students, in the military, or out of work, and have asked to keep them in the family member status even after age 21. We don't think there are many of these, but the Board decided that rather than trying to keep track of a lot of individuals, the age 21 requirement should simply be dropped. The rule on family members has always been that they must all be part of your household and this remains, so if the kids are still at home they can be family members, regardless of age. When they move to their own place, then they should join the club as individuals. BUDGETIt's almost mid-year, but the BoD did finally approve a proposed budget for 2003. It is not much different from last year. The major numbers are as follows: INCOME:
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| /td> | net Projected | ($260) |
This is as balanced as it is possible for an estimated budget to be and we shall be very lucky if it works out this well. The Board chose to drop plans to buy an additional $5000 of recycled asphalt pavement to put on the roads. We also dropped that item in 2002 but hope to buy some in 2004. Capital improvements which we will do this year include three more vault toilets, a new turning target mechanism on the pistol range, the weather station, a shed and shelter on the sporting clays range, a welder, the remainder of the south fence, boundary signs, and several other smaller things. Heavy maintenance costs will include an indefinite amount for grader repairs.
For the future, we need an equipment shed and workshop (the barn is in awful condition), a water well near the campsites, a firing line cover for the silhouette range and the east fence reconstruction. Since our dues are so much lower than most other clubs, there was some discussion - but no action - of a dues increase for 2004 and beyond. We really do not want to do that, but the alternative may be to delay things which will benefit the membership.
Thanks to Steve Valente for a lot of donations recently, starting with a trailer load of mulch for the trees, some rail for the silhouette range, a 150 gallon water tank and finally, hauling a load of steel out to the range on an 18 wheel flat bed semi-trailer. Thanks also to Robert Taylor for arranging for several ton's of steel from the Kmart warehouse in Brighton to be donated to the club. It will be a BIG help in building a workshop or shelter. Steve Valente, Dave Lee and Jerry Davidson have been involved in hauling it and still need help. Thanks all for donating your time, supplies, skills and effort!
There is a new clipboard just inside the door of the stat office building on the smallbore range, which has a list of things that one person can do alone in the middle of the week. Most of it is grunt work, but it needs to be done and many members need to fill their work bond. Take a look at it and items that come up. We will try to keep it timely.
One task that we're very happy to have back on the "always-needs-to-be-done" list is mowing the grass on the ranges. With the wet spring the grass on all the ranges has been growing like weeds, and we need volunteers to mow it. Please remember to check oil levels in the mowers and to keep them gassed up! Thanks to Barney Higgins for mowing the smallbore range before the Regional Match. The range looked positively lush from the firing line!
Speaking of growing things, Jim Brummerstedt would like to thank the following members and NON-MEMBERS(!) for the excellent help in the planting of 700 shrubs for habitat, as part of the WHIP and CHIP programs, on April 13th and 19th.
| April 13 | April 19 |
| Bastiaan Cornelissen | Jim Blaha |
| Jack Donnel | Jer Blaha |
| Art Fillion | Jack Donnel |
| Charles Garcia | George Linger |
| Jeff Hughey | Allan MacDougal Jr. |
| Bill Karsell | Erroll McGlaughlin |
| Mike Moss | Eric Shaffer |
| Allan MacDougal Jr. |
A very special thanks to Non-Members Dan Page, Jodie Jurgeneit and Ryan Taddeo for helping out as well. Yes - you are reading this right, some members put in two good days and three non-members donated their time to help make the WHIP and CHIP projects a success.
On Easter Sunday, three members came out to help wrap things up in case they did not finish the WHIP planting on Saturday. Jeff Kwon, John Ashcraft and Jeff Lamer helped with several small projects that needed to get done. Thanks to everyone for your special effort!
(Also - on Easter Sunday the three members who were shooting on the 300 yard line did not remove the targets from the carriers. Yes - they were taken down for you - but don't make a habit of this!!)
The guidelines of the WHIP and CHIP programs require us to plant - drought or no drought, and we've been fortunate to have a wet spring to help our efforts. Things look good out there and new growth is already appearing. The new archery range is set up in the middle of the plantation, and eventually ought to be nestled in a nice grove of trees and shrubs. Bill Flynn will be having some bow and arrow events soon. Call Bill at 303-470-1711 for more information.
The Sporting Clays area and the adjoining Bijou Creek bottom are off limits to rifle and handgun shooting. Shotguns and archery only are allowed in that area. The Club boundaries are too small to handle rifles and handguns. Bullets easily carry off our property from there. All firing must be done at the established ranges into the backstops. Thank you!
Want to get a friend interested in shooting? We recommend the Smallbore Silhouette fun shoots. Recently I took a pal out to the range, and he balked at the gear and groaned over the position involved in prone smallbore shooting. Then we went over to the silhouette range and had a ball sending those little chickens flying at 40 meters! There's an article on airgun silhouette in the June issue of Shooting Sports USA, and Lones Wigger is quoted saying "Silhouette shooting, with its time limits and equipment restrictions, is as challenging as any shooting sport in which I've competed." Don McKnight is hosting smallbore silhouette fun shoots to familiarize folks with this sport. He has dates scheduled throughout the summer, the next two being June 14th and 28th. Call Don at 303-732-0587 for more information. There's also highpower and IHMSA pistol silhouette shooting - something for everyone!
The Club wishes to thank long time member Jim Coker for the donation of a .22 caliber Remington 540X for use by juniors. Jim also donated some reloading manuals and shooting journals that will be available for reference by club members. Thanks Jim!
Club Member Steve Valente is looking for a left handed starter rifle for a junior shooter. Bolt action is preferred, but a lever rifle such as a BSA or Stevens will work too. If you have a southpaw rifle you'd like to sell, please give him a call at 303-907-0412.
The Hi Power 1000 Yard Bench Rest NBRSA National Championship is being held at CRC this year, on September 26, 27 and 28th. We need volunteer scorekeepers to help out at this event. It's a great way to fill your work bond, and to see the wide variety of 1000-yard bench guns.
ATTENTION: COOKOUT CHAMPS!If you'd rather cook than count, we need about three people to prepare food on Saturday, September 27th at this event. Cooking should start around noon and the day should be done around 4:00pm. If you're a grilling guru - please call Jim Brummerstedt at 303-772-5145 and help feed our competitors. It's a chance to watch the match, and you're guaranteed a grateful (and hungry) reception.
Three time Olympic Gold Medallist, and current Smallbore Prone National Champion, Lones Wigger will be hosting a smallbore clinic Sunday, June 29th. If you'd like to improve your shooting skills, this is the chance to learn from a master! Space is limited - so call Denny Reul at 303-238-5696 to reserve your spot!
On May 4th, 2003 18 "unclassified" new shooters attended the 50 shot National Match Course for, what was for many, their first NRA sanctioned match. Switchy winds, not uncommon to the range at CRC, provided challenging conditions for both new shooters and coaches making for an enjoyable time for all.
Match 1 - Standing Offhand. Robert Baird shot an 81-1X for 1st place. Stephen Rose shot 80-1X for 2nd, with Thomas Christian taking 3rd with 80-0X. Match 2, Sitting Rapid. Robert Baird shot an impressive 93-2X for first place. Thomas Christian 89-1X for, 2nd and Mark Griggs 88-1X for 3rd place. Match 3 - Rapid Prone from 300 yards. Michael Koloschia (A Marksman!) shot an impressive 93-2X for first place. Impressive shooting Michael. 2nd was Jill Walter with a 87-0X. 3rd went to Robert Baird with an 87-0X also. Slow prone at 600 yards was tough in the changing winds. All the shooters got a taste of how challenging and fun "long range" can be. Thomas Christian turned in a 176-1X for 1st place. 2nd went to Bart Cox with a 167-1X with 3rd going to Mike Leake with a 166-2X. Match 5 is the aggregate of the first 4 matches. Not surprisingly Match Winner went to Robert Baird with a 427-5X. Very good shooting Robert. Your first classification card should be interesting. Not surprising either was Thomas Christian with an equally impressive 424-2X. Mike Leake took 3rd with a 414-2X. Good shooting by all!
Thanks to all the volunteers that made it all work: Richard Tauche ran the Range with Alden Lewis managing the pits. Statistical officer was Darel Billings. Special thanks to Jerry Davidson for all his hard work as match director. Many of us have done work at matches but the match director job is certainly the toughest. Without Match Directors nothing would get done.
Kudos also to all the shooters who volunteered as coaches. The shooting sports have given us all memories to be thankful for, give some of 'em back by volunteering.
A 600 Yard Any-Any match was held May 17th. It got a little windy in the afternoon, but competitors got away without getting rained on.
The overall Match Winner was Harold Stahl with a score of 583-23x. For individual matches the scores were as follows:

1st HM/MA Harold Stahl 195-6x
1st EX/SS/MK Al Lewis 187-7x
2nd EX/SS/MK Dan Harris 185-4x

1st EX/SS/MK John Frank 561-16x
2nd EX/SS/MK Al Lewis 556-15x
F-Class Jim Harris 586-21x
Thanks Gary for hosting this match!
May 25th was the date for the second John C. Garand match of the year. 40 competitors turned out to enjoy this warm, windy day of shooting. The course of fire is 10 shots slow fire prone in 10 minutes, 10 shots rapid fire prone in 70 seconds, and 10 shots slow fire standing in 10 minutes. Competitors fired at 100 yards on the SR-1 target, or at 200 yards on the SR target. Eight shooters took advantage of the opportunity to shoot at 200 yards. Except for the effect of the high, switching wind on the bullets and the difficulty of seeing bullet holes in the high mirage, this opportunity to shoot at the longer distance was appreciated.
Scores were close, but First place went to Mick Bland (New M1 Garand) with a score of 266-6x. (Nice x count Mick!) Second place was Keith Mercier (New M1 Garand) with 265-1x, and third was James Heard (Experienced M1 Garand) with a 264-1x. A complete list of the scores is available on our website at www.crci.org.
We have many people to thank for this event. Special thanks to Jay Lindstrom who is an instructor at the Colorado School of Trades Gunsmith school, who taught a new shooter "mini clinic", and to Bob Manly, Jack Larabee and Ed O'Brian for helping run the match. Thanks also to Jerry Davidson for bringing six CSSA M1 Garands for use by shooters who do not own a US Service Rifle and to CSSA President Tony Fabian for approving the club's use of these rifles, and for providing two CSSA hats to be awarded at each match this year. And last but not least - thanks to all the competitors who came out, and to the experienced shooters who assisted the new shooters in "how to do it". The next CMP sponsored Garand match is Saturday, July 12. Call Bob Manly at 970-288-3703 for more information.
The summer league got off to its usual start - with winter weather! We knew the forecast was grim, and many chose to delay the start of the season until the following week, but a few hearty souls turned out on the official starting day. The league shoots a "half match" course of a 100 yard target, a dewar course of 100 yard and 50 yard target, a 50 meter target and a final 50 yard target. Scores are handicapped so new shooters are competitive with longtime shooters. The handicapped system really stood the test on May 17th. Laura Everitt shot a perfect 1000 score, but once the handicaps were figured in, didn't event place in the top 3 overall for the day! All really is fair in the summer league!
