Where the deer and the antelope play….

Recently, a small herd of pronghorn antelope has been spotted wandering on the range. I’ve seen them behind the pistol range and in the field near the camping pads, and other members have reported seeing them around as well.  The CRC range is a wildlife sanctuary and like all wildlife, the pronghorns are protected while they visit us. They may just be passing through, but pronghorns can be territorial, particularly towards fall, so please take extra care when checking downrange before shooting, especially long-range high power shooters. Keep all shots in the backstops, and remind any guests to the range that under no circumstances should any animal on the range become a target. If you think you see a small patch of tan moving around down range or on a backstop – DO NOT SHOOT! It may not be your eyes playing tricks on you. Take the time to double check for their presence, and if you see them wait for them to move along before firing. Wildlife being shot on our range is a criminal act, reportable to both the Sheriffs Department and the Department of Wildlife, and would have serious consequences for he club’s existence. If that’s not enough to convince you, remember the Apache folktale that warns against hunting these prairie racers. According to legend the most beautiful young woman in the tribe became an antelope herself, (how and why that happened I’m a bit unclear on…) and her descendants run with the herds to this day.   So as always, keep the range safe for all our visitors!

Stormy Weather

The string of hot sunny days we’ve seen recently is making the damp beginnings of June feel like a distant memory.  But shooters who were out on the range for one of the many matches and events scheduled for Saturday June 4 probably haven’t forgotten what a cold rainy day that turned out to be. Hail that had fallen during storms the night before was still on the ground the next morning, and unlike many stormy days in Colorado, this day didn’t start nice and get ugly later – it was cold, windy and threatening rain from sunrise on.

Still, many hearty shooters ignored the weatherman and headed out to the range. The Eastern Colorado Regional Pistol Championships, a High Power Rifle Long Range Palma Tournament, Sporting Clays, and the Smallbore Rocky Mountain Regional Match were all scheduled that weekend.

Jim Adell reports that the high power shooters formed up on the 800-yard line and the relay got a few shots down range before the rain stared.  But the wind was strong even before the rain, and once visibility ended with the start of the rain, the match was called off.  The full calendar of events on the high power range leaves no date open for rescheduling this match, which is very unfortunate because a lot of time and preparation went into setting this match up.

Over on the smallbore range, those shooters who braved the early part of the summer league were used to less-than-ideal conditions, and the match got underway.  Rain started falling just as the 50-yard stage was finishing up.  The rain was fairly misty at first, and seeing as how everyone was cold and damp already, the line was called for the 50-meter stage.  But halfway through, the rain picked up.  The line elected to finish the 50-meter stage – then call it a wash – literally.

But shooters who suffered the bad weather on Saturday were well rewarded on Sunday.  Sunny and mild with practically no wind, the great shooting conditions helped dry out equipment and helped make up for Saturday.  Plus now all the guns had been thoroughly cleaned and oiled, and the result for the smallbore folks were outstanding scores, including TWO perfect 1600 scores,  shot by Mike Snyder and Dan Wigger.

Mike Snyder is this years Regional Champion and aggregate match winner, not only due to the perfect score on Sunday, but to good shooting on Saturday, especially given the conditions. (I think the 393 he shot during the 50-meter match on Saturday may be a bigger triumph than the clean targets on Sunday!) 2nd Place in the aggregate was Joe Hein, and 3rd was Matt Rawlings, both of whom made the trip up from the Olympic Training Center. First Expert was junior shooter Taylor Beard. First Sharpshooter was Norm Austen, and First Marksman was Evan Williams.  In the mentor style Team Match, first place went to the father/daughter team of Peter and Tamera Reul.  Second place was Taylor Beard and Joe Hein.

The Match Director wants to thank the shooters who made it out to this match, many who came from far points on the compass such as Kansas, Utah, and Steamboat Springs.  Also heartfelt thanks to the volunteers who helped on the line including Larry Kelley, Esther Redington, Gene Redington, Stacy Mullen, Candy Beard, Ron Best, and Phil and Carol Scholl (and anybody else I’ve forgotten) for braving the weather and helping out both days.  They got cold and wet right along with the shooters and we appreciate their uncomplaining assistance!

Wanted: Match Director

CRC is looking for a volunteer to fill a new Match Director position, that of a 22 Rimfire Bench Rest Match Director.  The person filling this position will be responsible for developing a new Bench Rest shooting program at CRC, supervising range construction for this new discipline, organizing matches, creating a match schedule, an awards program, and promoting interest in the 22 Rimfire Bench Rest program.  It’s a big job, but we know there are plenty of interested and capable members out there.  If you’d like more information please contact Ron Best at (303) 986-0836.

Reminder

The equipment and range items at CRC don’t (do Not) have homing devices. You’re welcome to use what you need on the range that you need it, but if you move something from one range to another, please move it back to where you found it BEFORE you leave the range each time, every time.  Someone – or whole groups of someones - may be counting on that item being where you found it, and won’t know where to look for it if it’s not there.  It’s a waste of time and effort looking for moved benches, tables, equipment, etc. Please be conscience of the shooters, equipment operators, etc. that come after you, and return all borrowed or moved items to their proper place before heading out. It will be much appreciated!  Thanks.

Silhouette News

By Bob McAlice

Cowboy Rifle Silhouette

Nine shooters took a chance on the weather Saturday April 30th to try out Cowboy Rifle Silhouette.  They got lucky and had a narrow window of decent weather between waves of rain and snow, with just enough to complete the 40 shot match.  This game uses lever action rifles in 30-30, 32 spcl, 38-55 etc. to knock down metal animal silhouettes.  Some pretty good scores were fired by all.

Bob McAlice 32 x 40                  Cliff Snyder 21 x 40

Tom Bant 30 x 40                     Clay Scherrer 19x 40

Jim Nonnemacher 26 x 40      Susan Snyder 15 x 40

Bob Snyder 25 x 40                 Geri Snyder 11 x 40

Candy Nonnemacher 23 x 40

Within minutes of the match being completed and the targets put away, the weather got ugly with wind driven rain.  This kept the after match B.S. to a minimum and all went home. We plan on repeating this match a couple of more times this year.  Watch the newsletter for future match dates.

WORKBOND NEEDS

On September 17 & 18 CRC will be hosting a two-day high power silhouette match.  We will need target setters to help out with the match. This task is nothing more than resetting the target animals between relays.  We send four people down range in our pickup to reset and paint the hits on the animals. This is one of the better workbond tasks the club offers. We get to knock them down, then you drive down and set them back up again. This will be a full day starting at 8am and ending at approximately 3pm. We will need four people each day.  Call Bob McAlice at 303-403-4063 if you would like to volunteer.

High power

The High Power 1000 Yard Bench Rest State Championship was held the weekend of July 2-3.  24 shooters came out for this event, 13 shooting both Light Gun and Heavy Gun matches, 9 only Light Gun and 2 only Heavy Gun.

In the single target, the score winner for both Light and Heavy Gun was Regan Green, closely followed by Kregg Slack.  The three target winner in Light Gun was Regan Green and Heavy Gun, Dee Tompkins.  6 Target winner in both Light Gun and Heavy Gun score was George Tompkins followed in Light Gun by Barry Benson and in Heavy Gun by Warren Smith.

The 12 Target combined score winner was Dee Tompkins, and second was Warren Smith, and the combined aggregate Winner was also Dee Tompkins, second was Regan Green.  Good shooting everyone!  The next 1000 Yard Bench Rest match is July 31.

High Power

Sunday July 17th CRC hosted the John C. Garand Match, a Civilian Marksmanship Program sponsored event.  49 competitors came out to warm and windy conditions for this match. Fortunately the temperature stayed in the 90◦ area!  The course of fire has three stages: Ten shots slow fire prone in ten minutes (fired after 5 sighting shots in five minutes);  ten shots rapid fire prone in 70 seconds; and ten shots slow fire standing in ten minutes.

Workbond Update

By Dave Paananen

The summer is shooting by.  Remember that your workbond must be completed before November 1st.  That’s less than 4 months away. There are many opportunities to help the Match Directors during July.  Give one of them a call to work at one of the shooting matches listed below.  We still need someone to manage some construction projects mentioned in the last newsletter.  The wet spring has made for more mowing chores than usual.  There are also a few miscellaneous jobs to be done.  Also, be planning ahead for the fall workdays October 15-16. All he ranges that weekend will be closed Saturday, and some on Sunday.  But we recommend not waiting till fall!  If there are projects you’d like to Contact me at  dpaananen@netzero.net or 303-673-0106 if you have questions.

CAMP PERRY

It’s summer camp for shooters time again – the National Matches are underway in Camp Perry Ohio.  If anyone from CRC is making the trip – we’d love to hear about your experience and results when you return.  Submit anything to Laura Everitt at laurae@weaver-group.com, or to Ron Best at crci@comcast.net.  Thanks and good luck everybody!
