Scores Submissions

Scores must be submitted in a comma or tab delimited data file - sans formatting - for it to be added to the website in a timely manner. I have some match software available for this purpose. Just ask for a copy.

With that in mind, you should all be mindful that any time I spend re-formatting your scores submissions, stripping formatting off and/or re-typing scores into html tables - takes away from the time from other development. Therefore, I must ask each of you to become familiar with whatever software you're using to generate tables, to see what export or "save" options you have that will output a DATA FILE. A simple set of scores will take me at least an hour to re-type and place into a webpage, whereas an unformatted delimited data file takes me a matter of about six seconds.

All the nice formatting in the world may be fine for match bulletins, but all that formatting is lost or must be stripped out of the files you send me in order for me to create tables in the web pages. I usually end up re-typing all the material at incredible cost to my schedule.

Modern word processors like Microsoft Word - provide you with the capability of creating web pages (.htm, .html files). You can create tables and will know pretty much what your scores will look like on the website - before you send them - if you use those capabilities. You don't have to hand-code html any more, so take advantage of your word processors web-authoring capabilities.

On another note: Data is Data.

If you want to send "just data", spreadsheets and databases provide export capabilities. You can tally up your scores electronically, export them to a common file format and send them as an attachment. We can import that data into an html table on the website.

So, please look up how to export a comma-delimited or comma-separated file, or the tab-delimited equivalent. Eventually, unless you take your own initiative to do so, we will have software that will utilize that type of output (comma-delimited or CSV files, tab-delimited files or XML) and will take those files and format them with a cascading style sheet or perhaps even an XSL stylesheet. Until then, pick a database program of some kind like Foxpro or Access if you cannot avoid using a spreadsheet like Excel to do the data output operation and use it to create simple, unformatted tables you can use to output plain delimited files like the sample here:

This file will look like a proper table once imported into DreamWeaver, our current (and superior) web authoring tool.

In Excel, you can "save as CSV". In Access, you can "export textfiles", in Visual Foxpro you can "COPY TO c:\output.txt TYPE DELIMITED WITH ,".

You'd begin by creating your table (preferably in database software), entering your data and outputting the result, a plain text file. The web software we use will handle the rest of the process of placing your data into a formatted table.

With your data, you should be able to import it into a package like Excel, Access, Foxpro or PowerBuilder to give it a nice presentation for output as a report or as html for an e-mail.

Be mindful that if you send hard copy - your scores may NEVER be posted. I have way too much pressure on my time to develop software, time that I will not waste in re-typing scores that you then send me as printouts. Send me data files, not paper.
